Conversion instructions

In ArcGIS, open your map in ArcMap and then:

  1. Open the ArcToolbox Window (which you can access either by clicking on the red toolbox button at the top, or by going to "Window" and then "ArcToolbox").

  2. Select the “Index” tab at the bottom of the ArcToolbox, which will allow you to see the tools in the toolbox sorted by alphabetization.
  3. Select “Write Features to Text File” and double-click on that option.

  4. This will open a new box with three options: Input Features, Output Text File, Decimal Separator Character.

  5. In “Input Features” click on the open file button on the right and then select the polygon shape file that you would like to convert, and double-click on it.

  6. In “Output Text File” click on the open file button on the right and then select where you would like the output text file to be stored, what it should be called, and then select “save.”

  7. In “Decimal Separator Character” you may select any of the choices.

  8. Now select “OK” and ArcMap will run the script, which may take a few moments.

  9. Once complete, find the text file with the output and copy ALL of it.

  10. Now paste all of that output into the “Paste from ArcGIS” box in the converter. This may take a few moments to complete.

  11. Once complete, click on the “convert” button.

  12. Once complete, click on the “draw” button and your ArcGIS map should be rendered as a vector graphic.

  13. Paste all of that output into the “XML for HBU ” box in a new file and save it.
